Designed in 2005, then painted in 2008, "Quartet" was like a baby waiting to be born. It felt wonderful to finally have it out of me and I do feel it was worth the wait. This image is created primarily with the use of the airbrush. Its distinctly smooth appearance and atmosphere are a result of this technique and as with many of my other images, "Quartet" was a first for me. This image was the first time that I choose to not allow color to have a strong role but rather use the lack of color to work with the painting’s expression and vibe. A slight cast of blue tint was painted just moments before photography began, to step just outside of the grays that I had so intentionally avoided, to date. I was very patient to find the appropriate model for this piece and she was patient with me as well. I chose Christina one full year before I painted her and I remember her feeling as if it might never happen. Here it is.
