"Koi"

"Koi" began as a commission. The client/model mentioned koi as a possible subject matter and I developed it from there. I first photographed the model/client (Katie) in multiple poses as I usually do in search for a definitive and optimal pose to then work with. It was after choosing the pose that everything started to fall into place. The yin-yang design quite organically developed as I started to figure out how to handle the negative space that was so abundant in the top half of the composition. Her body separates the two halves in what appears to be an ideal fashion. Several technical and mathematical issues needed to be worked out for success and I credit my photographer Max, with helping to guide me through the bottom half of the circle pattern. (See the photo in the process area where Max is viewing the image through a roll of tape.) This was a brilliant idea of his that really helped keep things balanced. Katie was a delight and pleasure to work with as well.
